God speak ? Is he still speaking now? How do I know it's God speaking to me?
These are some of the questions that a modern day Christian asks oneself ?
But I believe it's not just a modern question....
Let's imagine you were a Jew at the time of Jesus or a Greek at the time of Paul you had to face the same questions... or yourself you think you received a message from God how would verify.
And the answer to any of the above questions determines your orientation. There are people who believe God does not speak . Others thinks God speaks but humans muddle the message, or he spoke back then but stopped at some point.
In my opinion there are two extremes.
On one end thinking God does not speak. On the other end is attributing anything someone feels like it's God speaking.
So this book is really about these questions, using bible scripture as the guidelines. But if the scripture is not your authority I suggest you read books like Mere Christianity by C.S Lewis. This books is for those that believe but want to explore the dynamics of his voice.
A good point to start is John 10. Jesus shares that his sheep his voice and they follow. And scripture is heavily littered with God speaking to men or inspiring them and being in the new covenant the same holds true.
Today we're found in state where a lot of people speak in the Lord's name and if you're not careful you'll be on a goose chase following shadows thinking it's the voice of the shepherd.
So the first part I want to explore in this part is that listening to God is for every believer.
It is not just for prophets to listen to what the Lord is saying. If you remember God wanted to make Israel a nation of priests and he extends the same opportunity to us...he says we're a chosen generation, a royal priesthood. Even when the children of Israel wanted to hear God at Horeb, he didn't refuse it's the people who said It's fine Moses can do it for us.
This is important because I don't think God will force you if you relegate this task to others.
So us being sheep, we can hear the voice and follow it. It's just nature... yes you need to learn languages to understand but hearing in itself is a sense. And if we have accepted Jesus, the bible says we have peace with God and we can therefore hear his voice.
Sometimes we rely on other people to listen for us. This is different from embracing the grace and power of God in other believers. It's not your pastor's job to litsen to God for you, nor the brother with the gift of prophecy, nor the sister who sees visions.
You the sheep can hear his voice and follow it. Develop a relationship with God and that's starting point.
We'll talk about other things... in the blogs to come..and read the book if you can.
